We were both students in the political science doctoral program. He in International Relations and me in Public Administration and Public Policy. He went on to get his PhD from Carolina while I got a wife and no degree. In fact, he was the one who introduced me to my late first wife Rosanne.<\/p>\n<p>Milo went on to teach at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southalabama.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of South Alabama<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_College_of_Switzerland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American College of Switzerland<\/a>, and finally at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmary.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Saint Mary&#8217;s University<\/a> in Emmitsburg, Maryland where he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icpj-gettysburg.org\/newsletter\/200802\/rodriguez.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made <\/a>an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmary.edu\/alumni\/alumni_news\/mount-magazine\/pdfs\/MountMagSpr11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indelible mark<\/a>&nbsp;on his students. He was leading a semester trip abroad in 2008 to Ireland &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmary.edu\/alumni\/alumni_news\/mount-magazine\/pdfs\/MountMagFall07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when he passed away<\/a>&nbsp;from complications related to his kidney and pancreas transplant. The story that always resonated with me was about how they took his toy trains when he was an eight year old. They took them because Milo&#8217;s family wasn&#8217;t part of the proletariat.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of people take a kid&#8217;s toy trains in the name of <i>La Revoluci\u00f3n.<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\nNow that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/18\/world\/americas\/us-cuba-relations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama has unilaterally re-established diplomatic relations with Cuba<\/a>, I wonder what Milo would think. Milo was a pro-military, pro-gun kinda-liberal college professor who grew up in Miami and Madrid. He enjoyed Duke basketball, good cigars, good Scotch and cognac, military re-enacting, and girl watching. He may have said it was time or he may have said, &#8220;hell, no!&#8221;. And frankly, I&#8217;ll never know.
