Carolina has a non-partisan electoral system for all levels of judges. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialselection.us\/judicial_selection\/index.cfm?state=NC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prior to 1996<\/a>, judicial elections were partisan. Appellate level judgeships &#8211; Court of Appeals and Supreme Court &#8211; were the last to go non-partisan making the transition in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Given that, how can you figure out who is conservative and who is liberal? Or who is pro-gun and who is anti-gun. We recently saw what a difference it can make when <a href=\"http:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com\/2014\/10\/grnc-responds-to-judge-stephens-ruling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens blatantly ignored the black letter law<\/a> and allowed Ag Commissioner Steve Troxler (R-NC) to ban guns at the NC State Fair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com\/2014\/10\/grnc-responds-to-judge-stephens-ruling.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The State Board of Elections does put out a Judicial Voter Guide<\/a> which includes a short statement from each candidate, gives their education and work history, and provides a link, if any, to their websites. To be frank, it is of little use other than to tell you some of their work history and educational background.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the candidates&#8217; websites tend to be of more value. For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernforjudge.com\/about_bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judge Bill Southern<\/a>, who is running for the NC Court of Appeals against Judge Lucy Inman, tells you he is a member of the NRA and is part of the conservative\/libertarian John Locke Foundation&#8217;s candidate development program. By contrast, Supreme Court Associate Justice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robinhudson.org\/endorsement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Hudson touts her endorsements<\/a> from the Durham People&#8217;s Alliance, NC chapter of NOW, and the NC AFL-CIO. You can be pretty much assured that she is not a conservative.<\/p>\n<p>The North Carolina Republican Party has issued their endorsements at the state level as has the Grass Roots North Carolina Political Victory Fund. With the exception of the &#8220;Martin seat&#8221;, they agree. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/page\/statewide-candidates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina Democratic Party also made endorsements<\/a> which are 180 deg. from those below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgop.org\/judges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From the GOP<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i><b>Supreme Court Chief Justice<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Mark Martin<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nSupreme Court Justice (Martin seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Bob Hunter<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nSupreme Court Justice (Hudson seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Eric Levinson<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nSupreme Court Justice (Beasley seat)<\/b><br \/>\nMike Robinson<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nCourt of Appeals (Hunter seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Bill Southern<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nCourt of Appeals (Martin seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge John Tyson<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nCourt of Appeals (Stroud seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Donna Stroud (unopposed)<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nCourt of Appeals (Davis seat)<\/b><br \/>\nJudge Paul Holcombe<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps more important to gun owners is this list of endorsements from the GRNC PVF:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>GRNC-PVF Judicial Candidate Recommendations:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Supreme Court (Chief Justice): Mark Martin<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Supreme Court (Martin seat): Bob Hunter<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Supreme Court (Hudson seat): Eric Levinson<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Supreme Court (Beasley seat): Mike Robinson<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Court of Appeals (Martin seat): Marion Warren<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Court of Appeals (Hunter seat): Bill Southern<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Court of Appeals (Stroud seat): Donna Stroud<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Court of Appeals (Davis seat): Paul Holcombe<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What is called the &#8220;Martin seat&#8221; is to fill the vacancy left open when Chief Judge John Martin retired. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/2014\/10\/17\/4242107_a-whopping-19-candidates-vying.html?rh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There are, believe it or not, 19 candidates<\/a> for that open seat. In addition to the two people endorsed for this seat by the GOP and GRNC-PVF, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elizabethdavenportscott.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Davenport Scott<\/a> and Valerie Johnson Zachary are also worth a look. Both are Republicans. Zachary has been endorsed by Conservatives of Guilford County and touts herself a conservative. What makes her somewhat unusual is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valeriezachary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she has a law degree from Harvard<\/a> and practices in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yadkinville,_North_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yadkinville, pop. 2,818<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com\/2014\/10\/now-where-have-i-heard-that-name-before.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I did a blog post earlier<\/a> this month regarding Judge Mark Davis who is seeking a full term on the Court of Appeals. Unless he is just a hired gun who will say anything to win a case, he is no friend of the Second Amendment. For that reason, Judge Paul Holcombe has my vote.<\/p>\n<p>Early voting started on Thursday, October 23rd. To find out where you can vote early (assuming you are a registered NC voter), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsbe.gov\/webapps\/os_sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">go here<\/a>. The one thing to remember is that voting a straight ticket won&#8217;t impact these races.
