For it was with a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FN_Model_1910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FN Model 1910 chambered in .380 Auto<\/a> (or 9mm Browning to be more precise) that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gavrilo_Princip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavrilo Princip<\/a> assassinated <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand_of_Austria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria<\/a> and his wife <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie,_Duchess_of_Hohenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg<\/a> 100 years ago today in Sarajevo.<\/p>\n<p>Princip did it in the name of Yugoslav nationalism. He was a Bosnian Serb. As a result of the assassination, the <a href=\"http:\/\/wwi.lib.byu.edu\/index.php\/The_Austro-Hungarian_Declaration_of_War_on_Serbia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia<\/a> a month to the day after the Archduke was assassinated. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylearningsite.co.uk\/timeline_of_world_war_one.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A few days later Germany<\/a> which had declared support for Austria then declared war on Russia and the rush to war spiraled out of control. Barbara Tuchman describes this spiraling out of control in her book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0345476093\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0345476093&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=nolaonguanmo-20&amp;linkId=BMINZPFIDIDP5FSS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guns of August<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=nolaonguanmo-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0345476093\" height=\"1\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" width=\"1\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgm.at\/fileadmin\/_processed_\/csm_tatwaffe_c9964f5ad9.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hgm.at\/fileadmin\/_processed_\/csm_tatwaffe_c9964f5ad9.jpg\" height=\"424\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgm.at\/en\/exhibitions\/exhibitions\/sarajevo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princip&#8217;s FN Model 1910 is now a part of the permanent display<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hgm.at\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of Military History<\/a> in Vienna, Austria.
