National Shooting Sports Foundation sent out an email yesterday analyzing the midterm elections for their impact on the firearms industry as well as on firearm regulations. They will also be having a pair of webinars next Tuesday afternoon which I hope to be able to watch. I&#8217;ll report on those afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>I think the NSSF is correct in that a lot of bills will be proposed and may even pass the House dealing with gun control. These will then die in the Senate. They refer to the Senate as the Red Wall. I think they are also correct that the pace at which new judges will be confirmed will pick up.<\/p>\n<p>From the NSSF:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span style=\"color: black;\">A Blue Ripple, A Red Senate Wall And What It Means For The Firearms Industry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The<br \/>\n results are still trickling in on Wednesday, but we\u2019re getting a<br \/>\nclearer picture of what we can expect when it comes to the next two<br \/>\nyears for gun laws in the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Conventional<br \/>\n wisdom says that the party in the White House loses \u201cbigly\u201d when it<br \/>\ncomes to the midterm elections, but last night\u2019s results are proving<br \/>\ndifferent. We\u2019re seeing more of a mixed bag in the Congressional<br \/>\nresults, a changing landscape in the governorships and gun control<br \/>\nadvocates that&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/rg-2020-nanny-state-candidate-\/3mvnrw\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent big<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and claim victory. But that call might be a bit premature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>House of Representatives<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The U.S. House of Representatives&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/democrats-will-take-the-house-\/3mvnry\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>will flip<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;back to Democrat control in the 116th&nbsp;Congress.<br \/>\n There are several West Coast races still awaiting final counts, but Fox<br \/>\n News\u2019 Karl Rove predicted the final count will be 228-207 in favor of<br \/>\nDemocrats, which will see the Speaker of the House\u2019s gavel change hands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Prevailing sentiment says Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will again&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/r-im-really-good-at-what-i-do-\/3mvns1\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>become house speaker<\/strong><\/a>, but many incumbent and congressmen-elect have&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/tes-dont-support-nancy-pelosi-\/3mvns3\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vowed to not support<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;her<br \/>\n for the top leadership spot. We can expect short-term leadership<br \/>\npower-plays, but they will have little effect on what we will eventually<br \/>\n see in the next two years from the House.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it Means<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The \u201cBlue Wave\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/g5aVpIeDhCdmRqU0ZjaUVHejNNNyJ9\/3mvns5\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wasn\u2019t the tsunami<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;gun<br \/>\n control advocates expected, but that doesn\u2019t mean we won\u2019t see a flood<br \/>\nof gun control bills. Rep. Pelosi promised Floridians when she visited<br \/>\nthere in October that gun control would be a \u201ctop priority\u201d in the<br \/>\ncoming year. She said then that she\u2019d push for a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/ng-top-priorities-if-dems-win-\/3mvns7\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gun background check bill<\/a><\/strong>, which we can only assume means what she\u2019s already advocated for in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/-uploads-2018-03-40Percent-pdf\/3mvns9\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>universal background checks<\/strong>.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Expect more. Virginia Democratic Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton defeated Rep. Barbara Comstock on a platform that included&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/ntrol-candidates-election-html\/3mvnsc\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>banning AR-15<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;modern<br \/>\n sporting rifles and standard-capacity magazines. She\u2019s just one of<br \/>\nseveral newly elected members of Congress who will be looking to make<br \/>\ngood on their campaign promises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Expect<br \/>\n the House to turn from a legislative body to an investigative body.<br \/>\nDemocrats will take over every committee chairmanship. We should expect<br \/>\nlittle to get done in the way of legislation because they\u2019ll be more<br \/>\ninterested in&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/emocrats-trump-investigations-\/3mvnsf\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigating everything<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;from impeachment to Russian collusion to President Donald Trump\u2019s tax returns. And firearms will be in the mix too.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/midterms-article221102565-html\/3mvnsh\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Expect hearings<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on<br \/>\n taxpayer-funded gun violence research, magazine restrictions,<br \/>\nammunition bans, age-based gun bans and attempts to outright ban entire<br \/>\nclasses of firearms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Senate<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">If<br \/>\n the House was the \u201cBlue Ripple,\u201d the U.S. Senate served as the Red<br \/>\nWall. And it got bigger. Republicans appeared to pick up at least net<br \/>\nthree seats, including North Dakota\u2019s Kevin Cramer beating Heidi<br \/>\nHeitkamp, Missouri\u2019s Josh Hawley defeating Claire McCaskill, Florida\u2019s<br \/>\nRick Scott topping Bill Nelson and Indiana\u2019s Mike Braun overcoming Joe<br \/>\nDonnelly. Nevada\u2019s Sen. Dean Heller lost to Jacky Rosen, turning one<br \/>\nRepublican seat blue. Votes are still being counted in Arizona, and<br \/>\nMississippi is headed for a runoff. The first and most glaring lesson is<br \/>\n that with the exception of Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), each of these<br \/>\nDemocratic senators voted against Supreme Court Justice Brett<br \/>\nKavanaugh\u2019s confirmation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it Means<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Most<br \/>\n importantly, the Senate has been called the saucer that cools the hot<br \/>\ntea that comes over from the House. It\u2019s been a frustrating<br \/>\ncharacteristic at times, but now will become a reality that benefits the<br \/>\n firearms industry and gun owners. Legislation can pass the House by<br \/>\nsimple majority, even if it\u2019s just one vote. But it only takes one<br \/>\nsenator to kill a bad bill.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">It also means that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is going to&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/ions-another-trump-scotus-pick\/3mvnsk\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keep up the blistering pace<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>of<br \/>\n confirming judges to the bench and Trump Administration nominees won\u2019t<br \/>\nbe automatically mired in the morass of politics. That\u2019s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.nssf.org\/e\/127421\/-court-in-his-image-2018-10-10\/3mvnsm\/197142150\" style=\"color: #4d6e70;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially important<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;when<br \/>\n it comes to the Supreme Court. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Stephen<br \/>\n Breyer are in their eighties. Neither has indicated a desire to retire,<br \/>\n but no one foresaw that President Trump would nominate and confirm two<br \/>\njustices in his first two years either.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More to Come<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">We\u2019re<br \/>\n still sifting through all the results, including state governorships,<br \/>\nstate legislatures and ballot initiatives.
