&#8216;UA-115029161-1&#8217;);<\/p>\n<p>My series of Democrat state party platforms on gun control continues with Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. As I have found, some state parties merely adopt the national platform as their own and this continues with this series of states.<\/p>\n<p><b>Oklahoma<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There used to be a tradition of Oklahoma Democrats being strong supporters of the Second Amendment and gun rights. Former <a href=\"http:\/\/nraontherecord.org\/rep-dan-boren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rep. Dan Boren<\/a> (D-OK) is on the NRA Board of Directors and his father Sen. David Boren (D-OK) served on the NRA Board of Directors before him. That was then and this is now. The Oklahoma Democratic Party has adopted the DNC platform with its full agenda of gun control as their own.<\/p>\n<p>Given the state party doesn&#8217;t have anything specific to say about gun control, it is important to look at the candidates for governor and attorney. Drew Edmondson is the current attorney general of Oklahoma. His <a href=\"https:\/\/drewforoklahoma.com\/plan-for-oklahoma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website <\/a>makes no mention of &#8220;gun violence&#8221; or &#8220;gun safety&#8221;. However, he is on record <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news9.com\/story\/39024306\/gubernatorial-candidate-drew-edmondson-proposing-tougher-gun-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elsewhere <\/a>as saying that the age to purchase modern sporting rifles should be raised to 21.<\/p>\n<p>Running to replace him as attorney general is Mark Myles. He is an attorney in private practice in Oklahoma City. He says he &#8220;Support gun safety and responsible gun ownership.&#8221; He then goes on to say:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<b><i>Gun Safety<\/i><\/b><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>I support the Second Amendment and common sense regulations that are constitutional, reasonable, and in accord with the holdings of appellate courts. Guns must be stored safely and they must be out of the hands of the mentally ill. Mark strongly values the opinion of law enforcement and their role in keeping Oklahomans safe, and supports responsible gun ownership across the country.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hmm. &#8220;Common sense regulations&#8221; that are in accord with the holdings of appellate courts? I wonder how many Oklahomans are aware that the 9th Circuit has said you don&#8217;t have a right to carry outside the home or that the 4th Circuit has ruled that certain semi-automatic firearms and their magazines are outside the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Oregon<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Moving from a state where politicians and the Democratic Party are circumspect about their intentions for gun control to a state where it is more explicit, the Democratic Party of Oregon&#8217;s 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1D7kKA_5ITVqAnqZvtq1a6PDXqcPIY6j9\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">platform <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1tpLpdNlAv_LC9uwhi60I8HGSNAUj3K0t\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislative <\/a>priorities call for gun bans (among other things).<\/p>\n<p>From the platform, Article Six &#8211; Health Care, Basic Needs, and Gun Safety:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>We support the 2nd Amendment and believe that hunting, sport shooting, and safe, responsible gun ownership<br \/>\nare traditions worth preserving for future generations. We thus support comprehensive background checks for all<br \/>\ngun sales and believe in measures to reduce firearm-related violence, injury, death, and to promote public safety&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>We support a ban on the civilian sale and purchase of military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Their legislative priorities go even further:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>4.  Ban the sale and purchase of military-grade and assault weapons, such as AR-15s, and<br \/>\nequipment used to modify weapons into assault weapons. Limit magazine capacity<br \/>\nto 10 rounds. Raise the minimum age of long gun purchases from 18 to 21. Fund and<br \/>\nimplement buy-back programs for those weapons and magazines.<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>6. Repeal the Dickey Amendment and resume public research into gun violence in the<br \/>\nUnited States and fund comprehensive research to form evidence-based gun ownership<br \/>\nand use controls.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Oregon Democrats have a number of caucuses including a <a href=\"https:\/\/dpo.org\/caucuses\/gun-owners-caucus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gun Owners Caucus<\/a>. Reading their mission seems to be a mess of contradictory objectives. While they say they will push for a pro-2A legislative agenda, they then say they will support Democrats in office and those that are nominees. Gov. Kate Brown (D-OR) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2018\/08\/kate_browns_record_on_gun_cont.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a strong proponent of gun control<\/a> having signed many gun control bills and calling for more. Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum (D-OR) is likewise a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doj.state.or.us\/media-home\/news-media-releases\/ag-rosenblum-launches-new-resource-on-oregons-new-gun-safety-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proponent <\/a>of gun control. Those in the Gun Owners Caucus really can&#8217;t have it both ways. As it is, they seem to function more as a fig leave for the gun prohibitionists than anything else.<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/><\/b><br \/>\n<b>Pennsylvania<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania Democratic Party doesn&#8217;t have a platform on their website and <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Democratic_Party_of_Pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ballotpedia <\/a>says they adopt the DNC platform. Their &#8220;issues&#8221; page does not address anything dealing with firearms, gun control, or even gun safety (sic).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, let&#8217;s look at what Gov. Tom Wolf (D-PA) says he wants on gun control. Like the party, he doesn&#8217;t put gun control items on is campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfforpa.com\/record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. That said, he is where he stands according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ydr.com\/story\/news\/2018\/03\/16\/2018-pa-governors-race-what-gov-tom-wolf-says-gun-control-second-amendment\/390751002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>York Daily Record<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>Here&#8217;s what Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf has said and done about gun control and the Second Amendment.<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Wolf has supported:<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>expanding background checks to cover private sales of long guns, including shotguns and rifles;<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>banning bump stocks \u2014 devices that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly, mimicking the speed of automatic weapons;<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>increasing gun restrictions for defendants in domestic violence and protection-from-abuse cases.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Likewise, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com\/2016\/10\/bloomberg-buying-another-attorney.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D-PA)<\/a> who is not up for re-election is a strong proponent of gun control and was strongly backed by Michael Bloomberg. It should be pointed out that many Philadelphia area Republicans are, at best, neutral on gun control as they fear the influx of Bloomberg&#8217;s money. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pagunblog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sebastian <\/a>at Shall Not Be Questioned has reported on this for year.s<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Rhode Island<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/upriseri.com\/news\/politics\/democratic-party\/2018-09-16-ridemparty-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/upriseri.com\/news\/politics\/democratic-party\/2018-09-16-ridemparty-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Uprise RI<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ricagv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gun prohibitionists<\/a> were upset that the earlier versions of the party platform of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ridemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhode Island Democrats<\/a> didn&#8217;t include gun control. The 2018 version adds this to the platform but the prohibitionists are upset it doesn&#8217;t include a &#8220;assault weapon&#8221; (sic) and magazine ban along with language condemning attempts at national carry reciprocity.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the <a href=\"https:\/\/upriseri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Rhode-Island-Democratic-Party-Platform.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">platform <\/a>seems to be as bad as most.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i><b>REDUCING GUN VIOLENCE<\/b><\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>As Democrats, we<br \/>\nrespect the Constitution\u2019s Second Amendment and its guaranteed rights for<br \/>\nlaw<br \/>\n&#8211;<br \/>\nabiding citizens to keep and bear arms. At<br \/>\nthe same time, we recognize that there is a serious<br \/>\nissue with gun violence in our country, and we support<br \/>\nregulations regarding the safe use of<br \/>\nfirearms.<br \/>\nWe are proud of the thoughtful work that has been done in our state to<br \/>\nensure the safety<br \/>\nof our children and our communities<br \/>\nand we support<br \/>\npassage of<br \/>\nother common sense measures<br \/>\naimed at protecting the public from individuals who have demonstrated their inability to possess<br \/>\na firearm without putting others around them in danger.<br \/>\nWe<br \/>\nbelieve that we must<br \/>\nprovide the public with the tools to be proactive partners with law enforcement to reduce gun violence. To<br \/>\nkeep our communities safe, Rhode Island Democrats insist that Congress enact legislation to<br \/>\nrequire<br \/>\nunlicensed gun sellers at gun shows<br \/>\nand private gun dealers to conduct the same instant<br \/>\nbackground checks that licensed dealers need to conduct<br \/>\nusing the National Criminal Instant<br \/>\nBackground Check System<br \/>\n.<br \/>\nAdditionally, we support laws that protects our children and our<br \/>\nfamilies and will work to support common sense gun violence prevention measures. To get a better idea of what the Democrats would do if elected, let&#8217;s examine the positions of their candidates for governor and attorney general as those two positions would have the greatest impact on firearms legislation.<\/p>\n<p>James Smith is the Democrat nominee for governor facing Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC). His website has this <a href=\"https:\/\/jamessmith.com\/issues\/advocating-for-common-sense-gun-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">platform <\/a>regarding firearms:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i><b>Advocating for Common Sense Gun Safety<\/b><\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/><\/i><br \/>\n<i>James believes in a South Carolina that\u2019s stands with our youth and he was proud to stand with them at the March for our Lives rally in Columbia. As Governor, James will sign legislation that:<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Closes the Charleston loophole<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Bans bump stocks and trigger cranks<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Requires universal background checks, including for gun show sales<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Makes it a crime to threaten use of a weapon on school grounds<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Restricts retail sales of military-style assault weapons, including AR-15s<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Introduces individual responsibility measures requiring owners of military-style assault weapons to be responsible for safekeeping and reporting stolen weapons promptly<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Charleston loophole refers to a FFL being allowed to release a firearm to a purchaser after three business days if a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/services\/cjis\/nics\/a-nics-delay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> delayed response is received<\/a> during the NICS check.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anastopouloforag.com\/meet-constance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Constance Anastopoulo<\/a> is the Democrat nominee to face pro-gun Attorney General Alan Wilson (R-SC). She is the wife of Akim Anastopoulo whose <a href=\"https:\/\/akimlawfirm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal injury ambulance chasing ads<\/a> run daily on South Carolina TV stations. Before becoming a law professor at the Charleston School of Law, she practiced with her husband. She doesn&#8217;t have anything on her website dealing with the issues. However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/2018\/03\/prweb15371989.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in announcing her intention to run<\/a>, she said she would work to deny firearms to &#8220;domestic abusers&#8221;.
