In his speech, he said he was astounded that Congress hadn&#8217;t taken steps to address &#8220;gun violence&#8221; (sic). <\/p>\n<p>In reaction and to illustrate the importance of this election for both the Second Amendment and the future direction of the Supreme Court, Alan Gottlieb of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms released this statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>BELLEVUE, WA \u2013 Monday\u2019s high-profile prodding by retired Supreme<br \/>\nCourt Justice John Paul Stevens for Congress to do something, and for<br \/>\npresidential candidates to say something, about gun control proves the<br \/>\nimportance of who is in the White House and the U.S. Senate to make and<br \/>\nconfirm high court nominations, the Citizens Committee for the Right to<br \/>\nKeep and Bear Arms said today.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Reuters reported that the retired justice was the speaker at Monday\u2019s<br \/>\n luncheon hosted by the anti-gun Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.<br \/>\n Stevens wrote dissenting opinions on both the 2008 Heller ruling and<br \/>\nthe 2010 McDonald decision, both of which affirmed that the Second<br \/>\nAmendment protects an individual civil right to keep and bear arms.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIn both of his dissents,\u201d noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb,<br \/>\n\u201cJustice Stevens contended that the right to keep and bear arms was<br \/>\nlimited to state militia service. It was, and remains, an astonishing<br \/>\nposition on a fundamental civil right.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWhat Justice Stevens\u2019 speech clearly underscores,\u201d he continued, \u201cis<br \/>\n the critical importance of who is president, not just for the next four<br \/>\n years, but whenever a vacancy occurs on the high court. Imagine if<br \/>\nJustice Stevens\u2019 opinion had prevailed.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Stevens\u2019 dissent in the Heller case was heavily criticized by the<br \/>\nmajority opinion, written by Justice Antonin Scalia. The majority ruling<br \/>\n described Stevens\u2019 arguments as \u201csimply wrong,\u201d and at one point \u2013 when<br \/>\n addressing Stevens\u2019 history of the Second Amendment \u2013 said that he<br \/>\n\u201cflatly misreads the historical record.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cStevens\u2019 replacement on the Supreme Court was liberal Elena Kagan,\u201d<br \/>\nGottlieb noted. \u201cA liberal, anti-gun majority could easily narrow,<br \/>\nrather than expand, the scope of our Second Amendment.
