The ostensible reason behind this ban is that law enforcement authorities say people have been shining laser pointers at plane cockpits.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i>Earlier this month, state and federal law enforcement authorities warned<br \/>\n of the dangers of pointing lasers at planes, an increasingly common<br \/>\noccurrence that can temporarily blind pilots and put the crew and<br \/>\npassengers at risk.<\/p>\n<p>There were <\/i><br \/>\n <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2012\/09\/authorities_warn_of_dangers_cr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">269 reported laser &#8220;strikes&#8221; in New Jersey airspace last year<\/a>, authorities said, as compared to just four in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Laser pointers can serve a legitimate need in the classroom and in<br \/>\nbusiness settings, but clearly in those cases we don\u2019t need<br \/>\nsuper-powered laser pointers that can put people at risk,&#8221; the sponsor<br \/>\nof the bill, Assemblyman Nelson Albano (D-Cumberland) said.<\/i><br \/>\n <i><\/p>\n<p>The bill would impose fines of not more than $500 for the first offense<br \/>\nand not more than $1,000 for each subsequent offense. An identical bill<br \/>\npassed the Senate in June.<\/i><br \/>\n <i><br \/>\npeople at risk.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/2012\/Bills\/A3500\/3169_I1.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The bill, A3169,<\/a> doesn&#8217;t just impact those laser pointers used in making presentations. From the text of the bill: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>\n<i><span class=\"BillHeading2\"><span style=\"font-variant: normal !important; text-transform: uppercase;\">Be It Enacted <\/span><\/span><span class=\"BillLanguage\">by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of <\/span><span class=\"BillLanguage\">New Jersey<\/span><span class=\"BillLanguage\">:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<i>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; a. No person shall sell<br \/>\nor offer to sell a laser pointer that exceeds one milliwatt in output power.<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<i>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b> b.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For the purposes of this<br \/>\nsection, &#8220;laser pointer&#8221; means any device that emits laser light to<br \/>\nproject a beam that may be used for aiming, targeting, or pointing out<br \/>\nfeatures.<\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<i>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; c.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nothing in this section<br \/>\nshall apply to the sale of a laser pointer intended to be used by, or under the<br \/>\nsupervision of, a health care practitioner licensed under the laws of the State<br \/>\nof New Jersey.<\/i><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By this definition, the sale of the laser products sold by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crimsontrace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crimson Trace<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viridiangreenlaser.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viridian,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasermax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LaserMax<\/a> would all be outlawed.&nbsp; Their peak output is 5 milliwatts.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bill that needs to go nowhere. It will end up banning a self-defense tool that can help in stressful situations.
