Given yesterday&#8217;s refusal by the Supreme Court to consider a number of carry cases, that isn&#8217;t going to change anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some counties in California are effectively &#8220;shall issue&#8221;, the majority are not. That is the case with Santa Clara County which includes cities like San Jose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has led to charges of favoritism towards campaign donors to Sheriff Laurie Smith.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/donors-to-sheriffs-political-campaigns-far-more-likely-to-get-concealed-gun-permits\/2309812\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News Bay Area has done an investigative report<\/a><\/strong> on the issue. They found that there were 749 new applications for a carry permit in the 2014-2018 time period. If you were not a donor to the sheriff&#8217;s re-election coffers, you had about a 5.5% chance of obtaining a permit. However, if you were one of the 28 people who donated either directly or indirectly, your chances skyrocketed to a 79% approval rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"UTF-8\" src=\"https:\/\/nbcbayarea.com\/portableplayer\/?CID=1:4:2310079&#038;videoID=1751263299962&#038;origin=nbcbayarea.com&#038;fullWidth=y\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>While Sheriff Laurie Smith denies any correlation between campaign donations and CCW permits, the issue is still under investigation by the Santa Clara County DA&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rob, who publishes 2A Updates on Twitter, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/2Aupdates\/status\/1272769609830150145\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/a>, &#8220;Wow hard to believe a permit system where an elected official has unlimited discretion to approve or deny applications would result in political favoritism.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This generated a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/terriermix\/status\/1272861170949435392\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>response on Twitter<\/strong><\/a> to the effect that the Sheriff should just post the going amount to obtain a permit so that people could budget for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system in California and other states where carry permits are &#8220;may issue&#8221; is ripe for abuse. You have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/04\/17\/ex-cop-nypd-gun-license-division-was-a-bribery-machine\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>cases in New York City<\/strong><\/a> where police officials have been arrested on charges of accepting bribes to issue permits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheriff Smith&#8217;s campaign donation approach is just a little less obvious than an envelope full of cash &#8211; but not by much.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California is one of the few remaining &#8220;may issue&#8221; states.
