The chain includes such newspapers as the Sacremento Bee, the Miami Herald, and The State (Columbia, SC). Closer to me they own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cision.com\/us\/2012\/08\/top-10-daily-newspapers-in-north-carolina\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>three of the ten largest newspapers in North Carolina<\/strong><\/a> including The Charlotte Observer and the News and Observer of Raleigh. While I can&#8217;t speak to the non-NC parts of McClatchy, their NC papers tend to be very anti-gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/16\/business\/media\/hedge-fund-chatham-mcclatchy-postmedia-newspapers.html\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>New Jersey-based Chatham Asset Management<\/strong><\/a>, a hedge fund, is their largest creditor and has won an auction to buy the chain. The auction results must be finalized by the bankruptcy court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article244173267.html\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>From the N&amp;O<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cFrom the outset of this voluntary Chapter 11 filing, our aim was to permanently address both the company\u2019s legacy debt and pension obligations and strengthen our balance sheet in order to provide greater certainty and stability to the wider group of our colleagues and stakeholders who benefit from a restructured McClatchy,\u201d Craig Forman, president and CEO of McClatchy, said in a statement Sunday.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re pleased that Chatham and the supportive secured first-lien creditors believe in our business and our mission and are helping to achieve these goals.\u201d<\/p><p>When McClatchy, the nation\u2019s second largest local news company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article240139933.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its restructuring plan<\/a>\u00a0called for Chatham, which has been an investor since 2009, to emerge as owner. The company, whose stock had been publicly traded, would be under private ownership.<\/p><p>After the pandemic disrupted the economy in March, McClatchy added a second exit option, putting itself up for sale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Chatham owns a couple of other newspaper &amp; media companies: Canadian based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postmedia.com\/brands\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Postmedia Network<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Media,_Inc.\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Media<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American Media was the parent company of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalenquirer.com\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Enquirer<\/strong><\/a> until April 2019 when it was forced to sell it by Chatham. It was erroneously reported by the News &amp; Observer that they still owned it. Nonetheless, they retained such paragons of journalism as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanmediainc.com\/brands\/us-weekly\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Weekly<\/a><\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanmediainc.com\/brands\/star\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Star<\/strong><\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanmediainc.com\/brands\/touch-weekly\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> inTouch<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the conservative-leaning <a href=\"https:\/\/cprnc.org\/monday-mix\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carolina Partnership for Reform noted<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Just think\u2026 if you didn\u2019t believe the news from these papers before, now you\u2019ll have a reason to say why. And if you like scandal and sensation, you won\u2019t have to go to the grocery store checkout aisle to get it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When you consider it, the pairing of the News and Observer as a sister company to the American Media offerings is quite appropriate. While they are now piously progressive, as a student of North Carolina history, it is hard to forget their <a href=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/2015\/06\/03\/an-act-to-regulate-sale-of-concealed.html\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>role in advancing white supremacy<\/strong><\/a> on behalf of the Democratic Party. Whether it was <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibits.lib.unc.edu\/exhibits\/show\/1898\/primary\/editorial\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>editorials attacking miscegenation<\/strong><\/a> or their <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibits.lib.unc.edu\/exhibits\/show\/1898\/primary\/dem-sources\/cartoons-no\" class=\"rank-math-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>scurrilous cartoons<\/strong><\/a>, the N&amp;O (and the Charlotte Observer) was more sensational in its earlier days than even the tabloids are today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I said in the headline, how appropriate.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The McClatchy chain of newspapers is in bankruptcy.
