I learned, by reading academic literature, that by engaging in trophy hunting or merely desiring to do so, I am:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Engaging in male supremacy by seeking a trophy of my \u201cconquest\u201d<\/li><li>Taking part in an ongoing rehearsal of Western imperialist history<\/li><li>Seeking to subjugate and conquer \u201csubhuman\u201d (their words) indigenous peoples<\/li><li>Partaking in perpetuating the racist and sexual norms of oppression and social exclusion<\/li><li>A human supremacist<\/li><li>Not a conservationist<\/li><li>Alarming and social reprehensible<\/li><li>Violating the dignity of nonhuman animals<\/li><li>Entrenching my Western narrative of supremacy which is underpinned by my chauvinistic, colonialist and crudely utilitarian anthropocentric attitude.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bWho would have thought I was \u201cguilty\u201d of all of that just for wanting to go on a once-in-a-lifetime hunting trip to Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidently, that is the opinion of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chelsea-batavia-74622221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Chelsea Batavia<\/a><\/strong>, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/directory.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/people\/batavia-chelsea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">postdoc fellow<\/a><\/strong> in the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fes.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/graduate-programs\/forest-ecosystems-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Dept of Forest Ecosystems and Society<\/a><\/strong>, at Oregon State University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper, The Elephant (Head) in the Room, can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/conl.12565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>here<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This same lead author also thinks<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article\/69\/2\/125\/5248398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0<strong>tsetse fly eradication is not ethically justified.<\/strong><\/a>  This is despite almost 70 million Africans who are at risk for<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_trypanosomiasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> sleeping sickness.<\/a><\/strong> The disease, by the way, is fatal without treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Batavia was also one of the star&#8217;s of the anti-hunting<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/all-our-fights\/banning-trophy-hunting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>Humane Society of the US&#8217;s YouTube diatribe on trophy hunting.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Academia.edu<\/a><\/strong>, I subscribe to be notified of articles about wildlife conservation, Africa, and trophy hunting.
