First, my late best friend&#8217;s son served as a platoon leader and the executive officer of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/08\/magazine\/war-afghanistan-iraq-soldiers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viper Company<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=45Q6Bi-G3D4&amp;t=150s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1-26 INF<\/a><\/strong>, 3 BCT, 1st Infantry Division when they were in the Korengal Valley. Second, a friend from graduate school, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssl.armywarcollege.edu\/faculty\/#\/detailsBio\/43#top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Larry Goodson<\/a><\/strong>, wrote one of the only books examining Afghanistan from the time of the Soviet invasion until just prior to our intervention. That book, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3CwLHta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghanistan&#8217;s Endless War: State Failure, Regional Politics, and the Rise of the Taliban<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, is still available on Amazon (commission earned).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Army Center of Military History has now released a two-volume set on the war in Afghanistan entitled, <em>Modern War in an Ancient Land: The United States Army in Afghanistan 2001\u20132014.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" height=\"637\" src=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-42-19-440x637-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-42-19-440x637-1.jpg 440w, https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-42-19-440x637-1-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These volumes were prepared by the Chief of Staff of the Army&#8217;s Operation Enduring Freedom Study Group led by Col. Edmund Degen (USA-Ret). The Study Group was formed by the late Gen. Raymond Odierno when he was Chief of Staff to research and write an operational history of the U.S. Army&#8217;s involvement in Afghanistan from October 2001 until December 2014. I would imagine a third volume covering the years from 2015 until our disastrous withdrawal earlier this year will eventually be forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-44-11-440x633-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-44-11-440x633-2.jpg 440w, https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-44-11-440x633-2-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The narrative is focused at the operational level of war and will discuss policy and strategy only as needed to illuminate the operational story.
