After some preliminary introductions, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Members\/Biography\/S\/399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Danny Britt (R-Hoke, Robeson, Scotland)<\/a><\/strong>, the primary sponsor of S.50, introduced the bill and described its content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions were raised by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Members\/Biography\/S\/394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Paul Lowe (D-Forsyth)<\/a><\/strong> about training, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Members\/Biography\/S\/432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Julie Mayfield (D-Buncombe)<\/a><\/strong> with some general questions, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Members\/Biography\/S\/298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Ralph Hise (R-WNC)<\/a><\/strong> who asked what other right requires you to get a permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was then opened to public comment. Ken Stallings and Karen Raines represented Grass Roots North Carolina and urged passage. Likewise Sarah Kettle of the NRA spoke in favor of the bill with some reservations due to some of the restrictions on who qualifies. Opposing the bill were representatives from the left-wing activist group <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/democracyoutloud.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democracy Out Loud<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukehealth.org\/find-doctors-physicians\/anna-ruderman-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Anna Ruderman &#8211; a pediatrician from Durham<\/a><\/strong>, and a couple more whose affiliation I didn&#8217;t get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line is that S.50 has now passed the Senate Rules Committee and will go to the floor of the State Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full hearing can be viewed in the video below.
