My Uncle John  Sheridan was a freshman in college. He and a bunch of his friends  skipped class on December 8, 1941 and joined the Navy. While most of his  war was spent stateside, he finished WWII aboard the USS Bennington  CV-20 as an ETM 3rd Class. Unlike many who enlisted that day, he survived the war, eventually got married, raised three sons, and passed away in 2008 at the age of 83.<\/p>\n<p>My father&#8217;s draft papers from October 1940 say he was drafted for Army service in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usarpac.army.mil\/history\/dec7_hawndept.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Hawaiian Department&#8221;.<\/a> This was one of the War Department&#8217;s pre-WWII overseas units. As it was, my father never served in Hawaii but was assigned to what became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.army.mil\/books\/wwii\/Guard-US\/ch13.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caribbean Defense Command.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ww1647-91.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ww1647-91.jpg\" width=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ww1645-23.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/onlygunsandmoney.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/ww1645-23.jpg\" width=\"313\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The generation that actually served in Pearl Harbor on that fateful day are rapidly passing away. The Pearl Harbor Veterans Survivors Associations estimates that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/news\/Pearl+Harbor+veterans+return+Battleship\/5822182\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 2,700 veterans who served there that day are still alive<\/a> out of the original 60,000 sailors, soldiers, and airmen stationed there on December 7th. 100 of these survivors will attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiitribune-herald.com\/sections\/news\/state\/pearl-harbor-recalled.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ceremonies in Hawaii today<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>For a good selection of pictures from Japanese and US Naval Archives, go<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navsource.org\/Naval\/arph.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE:<\/b> The Pearl Harbor Veterans Survivors Association will shut down at the end of this year according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/07\/us\/fewer-veterans-to-remember-pearl-harbor-day.html?_r=4&amp;hp&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a story in the New York Times<\/a>.
