(Thus far, this is the only amendment to have been ratified by specially elected state conventions rather than by the state legislatures. See Article V.)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conventions<\/a>&nbsp;in the several states, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the states by the Congress.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nProhibition of &#8220;intoxicating liquors&#8221; as embodied in the 18th Amendment was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repealday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repealed<\/a> 84 years ago today. To <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdayinquotes.com\/2010\/08\/our-long-national-nightmare-is-over.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slightly paraphrase President Gerald Ford<\/a> who was speaking on an entirely different matter, &#8220;My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare <i>was <\/i>over&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We in the gun rights community should be especially happy to celebrate Repeal Day even if one is a teetotaler. The reason is that this period of time led to the rise of organized crime and its attendant violence. We are still living with the fallout from that area as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Firearms_Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we still have to pay a $200 tax for each and every suppressor<\/a>, SBR, SBS, full-auto firearm (made before May 19, 1986), etc. that we want to buy and register. Without Prohibition and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/fdr-escapes-assassination-in-miami\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attempted assassination of FDR<\/a>, we probably wouldn&#8217;t have had this gun control monstrosity imposed upon us.<\/p>\n<p>So tonight I plan to raise my glass to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_J._Blaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen.
