A final rule was released late in 2016 that would add these people to the NICS prohibited list. The number of people impacted is estimated at about four million recipients.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that these individuals need help managing their finances. They have never been adjudicated mentally deficient. I come across people on a daily basis who could use a trustee to manage their finances even though they are otherwise smart, capable individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives passed House Joint Resolution 40 on February 2nd that disapproved this rule issued by the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\">\n<div class=\"lbexHangWithMargin\" style=\"background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Times, &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 2em; text-indent: -2em;\">\nProviding for congressional disapproval under&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/quicksearch\/get.plx?title=5&amp;chapter=8\" style=\"color: #551a8b;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chapter 8<\/a>&nbsp;of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Social Security Administration relating to Implementation of the&nbsp;NICS&nbsp;Improvement Amendments Act of 2007.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lbexIndent\" style=\"background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Times, &quot;Times New Roman&quot;, serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; text-indent: 2em;\">\n<em>Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/null\" id=\"H2E9B583F0006479D9475ECADC4001A7A\" style=\"color: #3366cc; text-decoration: underline;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>That Congress disapproves the rule submitted by the Social Security Administration relating to Implementation of the&nbsp;NICS&nbsp;Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 (published at 81 Fed. Reg. 91702 (December 19, 2016)), and such rule shall have no force or effect.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Brady Campaign sent out a text alert this morning saying that the Senate will vote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-joint-resolution\/14?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22sjr+14%22%5D%7D&amp;r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Joint Resolution 14<\/a> on Tuesday. This is the Senate&#8217;s portion of the disapproval of the SSA rulemaking. They were urging their supporters to contact their Senators to &#8220;protect Brady background checks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>S.J.Res. 14 is sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-joint-resolution\/14\/cosponsors?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22sjr+14%22%5D%7D&amp;r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29 co-sponsors<\/a>. I was disappointed to see that neither of North Carolina&#8217;s senators was on the list. Nonetheless, we have the votes to overturn this rule if all the Republicans stick together.<\/p>\n<p>I would urge you to call or email your senator to express your approval for this measure.
