by During the 1850s and 1860s, the Swedes decided to introduce compulsory military training into their school system. This was to include target practice in their equivalent of high school. The training would take place with real rifles. Remington provided the earliest of these rifles with their 1867 rolling block rifle. These were eventually replaced by rifles made by the Swedish arms maker Carl Gustafs Stads.
The name of this rifle? The Model 1867-89-93 School Shooting Rifle.
If you gave a firearm that name today, bills would be introduced in Congress, the BATFE would pay a visit, and you’d probably be out of business very soon. However, if you think about it, the name given to that rifle is very correct. It was to be used in school shooting and marksmanship programs.
