Shotgun Drills For Home Defense

I came across to a link to this video earlier today. In it, Chris Baker of LuckyGunner.com goes through four drills that he suggests you should practice if you intend to use a shotgun for home defense. As I bought the Complementary Spouse a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 Bantam Tactical shotgun (with a purple stock and handguard!) for Christmas, I think these drills have a lot of merit.

The drills include:

  1. Mount, shoot one
  2. The follow-through
  3. Shoot, Reload, Shoot
  4. Reload from Empty

Chris explains it in detail here. I met Chris at the NRA Annual Meeting last year in Nashville. He impressed me as an on the ball sort of guy.

Interesting Buyout

Back in late December, Mark Malkowski and Stag Arms LLC ran afoul of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Stag Arms pled guilty to one felony charge of possession of unregistered machine guns and Malkowski pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to maintain proper records. The plea agreement required Malkowski to sell the company and is banned from owning or managing a firearms company.

Fast forward to February 29th. White Wolf Capital of Miami, Florida announced that it had acquired Stag Arms LLC from Mr. Malkowski. He will be retained as a consultant by White Wolf. They said that they intended to keep the company operating out of its existing facility in New Britain, Connecticut. Malkowski said the purchase was aligned with his concern for his employees.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for March 29. Considering the criminal charges, the sale and Malkowski’s earlier thoughts about moving the company, the outcome is better for New Britain and Central Connecticut than many people might have expected. In the end, it was the employees who kept the company local, Malkowski said.

“We had a lot of offers and we had a lot of people who had a lot of opinions but this one group was the one that aligned with the direction I was going,” he said. “You spend sometimes more time with your employees than you do with your family…if not for that I wouldn’t be here today.”

So a private equity firm buys a gun company. Big deal. We’ve seen that before. However, to me what makes this interesting are the other companies in White Wolf’s portfolio. In addition to Stag Arms, White Wolf owns Ballistic Advantage, Aero Precision USA, and VG6 Precision.

Tacoma, Washington-based Aero Precision is a major higher-end maker of AR components for the OEM market. In recent years, they have moved into making full firearms as well as uppers, lowers, and rails under their own label. Ballistic Advantage is barrel maker specializing in better quality AR barrels and components. They have partnered with Aero Precision on barrels. Finally, VG6 Precision, which was purchased by Aero Precision last fall, makes muzzle devices for both the AK and AR.

It looks to me like White Wolf is looking to build synergies in the good-to-better quality AR market. It will be interesting to see how they use the OEM capabilities of Aero Precision to work with Stag Arms. For all I know, Stag could have been a customer of Aero Precision for years.

Unlike a lot of buyouts, this one makes sense to me. I wish them luck in a competitive market.

Let’s be clear, conservatives: During this race, Trump fans are our opponents. But always and forever, the leftist scumbags of Occupy, BLM, MoveOn and their leaders like Bill Ayers, are our enemies, and if it’s a choice between the two I’ll side with the team that at least doesn’t hate America every single time. No equivocation. No hesitation. No regrets.

This nonsense in Chicago was a preview; to the extent Rubio and Cruz hinted that somehow Trump himself was even partially responsible for an organized mass of leftist thugs shutting down his speech they were at a minimum wrong and possibly strategically confused in thinking they can ride the progressive tiger for a bit until it eats Trump. If the left wants to make it a rumble, then we need to say “Let’s go,” not “Use your words.” Never take sides against the Family with the anti-American left, Fredo. Never.

A Turning Point?

I wonder if we have just witnessed a turning point in the presidential election. The turning point I refer to is Donald Trump’s cancelled rally in Chicago, the attendant organized street violence by leftist groups, and the mealy-mouthed reactions by Republicans Kasich, Rubio, and, most disappointingly, Cruz. The mainstream media, Hillary, and Bernie reacted as expected.

I should stop here and say that I’ve already voted for Ted Cruz in the North Carolina Republican primary and would do it again. I don’t like the stuff The Donald says but I’ll defend his right to say it no matter how absurd or offensive I find it.

Nonetheless, listening to people at a local gun show plus the comments of people that I respect within the gun culture are leading me to believe the events may have just pushed Trump over the top towards the Republican nomination. This is just a feeling, a gut reaction, that these events will drive much more support towards Trump than it drives away. Call it the reaction of the Silent Majority to use a term from political yesteryear.

I think there is a significant proportion of voters who are sick and tired of seeing the suppression of the free speech rights of conservatives being condoned even by other erstwhile conservatives. By contrast, every assorted leftist group imaginable can indulge in the most inflammatory speech and behavior with the tacit acceptance and perhaps even approval of the mainstream media. Moreover, they demand the right to suppress free speech when either the message or the messenger does not meet with their approval.

These are just some musings on a Sunday evening as I’ve been thinking about it most of the weekend. Time will tell if it is just a point in time or a turning point.

For North Carolinians – Early Voting Ends This Afternoon

Just a reminder for North Carolinians who plan to take advantage of early voting, it ends today at 1pm. Check with your local Board of Election for times and places. If you haven’t already voted and you don’t vote today, you’ll have to vote on Tuesday at your normal polling place. You will need a valid state approved ID card.

Both the NRA-PVF and GRNC-PVF have endorsed and are strongly recommending St. Sen. Buck Newtown in the Republican primary for Attorney General. He has been a sponsor of many of the gun rights bills that have passed in the last few sessions of the General Assembly. He needs our support.

GRNC Political Victory Fund Updates

Grass Roots North Carolina – Political Victory Fund has released an update to their candidate evaluations and recommendations. I have published it below.

The North Carolina primary is on March 15th. Early voting has started (the Complementary Spouse and I voted on Saturday) and you can find your early voting locations in your county by going through this NC Board of Elections link. You will need to show a valid ID to prove that you are who you say you are. This last bit is new and I, for one, am very pleased by it.

I would point out again that Superintendent of Public Instruction candidate Mark Johnson received a very substantial donation from none other than Michael Bloomberg. He is running as a Republican.

Errors, Omissions, and New Information 

US President: New
information reveals that Marco Rubio
voted for a city parks gun ban when he was a Commissioner for West Miami City, lowering his GRNC evaluation to 88% and, consequently, downgrading

Bloomberg Won’t Take The Risk

Just a few minutes ago, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced he would not run as a third-party candidate for President of the United States. He acknowledged the reality that a three way race might throw the presidential election into the House of Representatives where the (evil, gun-totin’ bitter clingers) “party loyalists” aka Republicans hold sway. He said that was a risk he just could not take.

As the race stands now, with Republicans in charge of both Houses, there is a good chance that my candidacy could lead to the election of Donald Trump or Senator Ted Cruz. That is not a risk I can take in good conscience.

He then goes on to trash both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

The other risk that he didn’t acknowledge is that even if the election didn’t go to the House of Representatives that a vote for him is a vote that Hillary Clinton wouldn’t get. I can’t think of many Trump or Cruz voters who would have voted from Bloomberg as an alternative to either Trump or Cruz.

Given that Hillary has gone all in for gun control, does anyone want to bet that Bloomberg’s PAC Independence USA won’t be doing mega-ads for Hillary and against any Republican? That’s a bet I wouldn’t take with any amount of money.

Interesting Map

Below is a map generated by the website iSideWith.com. The website polls visitors and seeks to match up potential voters with the candidates that most represent their views.

In this case, people were asked did they support more gun control. The results are interesting. With the exception of the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and the western suburbs of Boston, there was no strong push for more gun control. Amazingly given the attitudes of the local politicians, the people in the District of Columbia, Baltimore, and the DC metro counties were not strong proponents of gun control.

By contrast, there is the state of Wyoming. It is in deep purple. I never thought of purple as the color of freedom but in this case it is. More power to wonderful Wyoming, the Equality State.

A Republican Getting Money From Bloomberg Makes Me Feel Wary

Mark Johnson is a Republican running in North Carolina for Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Superintendent is the person in charge of the Department of Public Instruction which governs teacher licensing, K-12 curriculum, state-mandated testing, and the $9.2 billion state school budget.

The current occupant, June Atkinson (D-NC), is running for reelection and is strong proponent of Common Core. While it was thought she might retire, she is running and has primary opposition from retired principal Henry Pankey.

Johnson is a lawyer in Winston-Salem, a member of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education, and is an alumnus of Teach for America who taught high school in Charlotte. According to Andrea Dillon aka Lady Liberty 1885 who is staunch Common Core opponent, Johnson has told her he is not a fan of Common Core.

What makes me leery of Mark Johnson is a personal contribution to his campaign by our longtime friend Mike Bloomberg. Bloomberg and his daughter Emma have donated a combined $5,200 to Johnson’s campaign. Johnson says he doesn’t know why the Bloombergs made the donation. He said, “Some of his people mailed a check to me.”

Sorry, dude, but checks like that come with obligations to the donor. Just ask Virginia AG Mark Herring. If Johnson wins, will he be expected to fight to keep schools gun-free zones? Or will he argue before the General Assembly that they should overturn the law which allows concealed carriers to keep their firearms in locked vehicles on school property? Will Everytown’s joke of “gun safety” training be mandated in NC schools?

Johnson has amassed a substantial war chest with over $173,000 cash on hand at the end of 2015. By contrast, his opponents, Dunn school teacher J. Wesley Sills and Alamance County pediatrician Rosemary Stein, had less than $5,000 combined in their campaign accounts. That’s a lot of money for down ticket office.

Early voting has started in North Carolina. One thing I do know is that Mark Johnson will not be getting my vote. Lady Liberty likes Dr. Stein and I think I’ll give her a look.
