Almost As Bad As Obesity

Ralph Fascitelli, a member of the gun control group Washington Ceasefire, want Democrats to embrace gun control and make it an issue in this election. He says they are the party of “progressive stands on social issues”. He is upset that the Democrats aren’t saying more about gun control on the campaign trail and in their official platform.

Gun violence, which costs this country as much as a $100 billion annually and is perhaps along with obesity the number one public health issue of our time, was put on mute again.

He goes on to say that the Democrats have taken the wrong message from the 1994 elections which saw the Republicans win the House of Representatives as well as from Al Gore’s loss of his home state of Tennessee in 2000. Fascitelli says embracing gun control isn’t a lost cause. He compares it to Obama’s newly found appreciation for gay marriage as a way to “energize the base”.

Comparing guns to obesity and using specious statistics from the Brady Campaign is no way to make an effective argument. He may get the true believers to agree with him but your average Democratic politician who wants to get elected or re-elected will continue to mumble just enough platitudes to confuse the voters on both sides of the issue.

Keeping Democrats Drunk In Charlotte

The Democratic National Convention is going to be in Charlotte, North Carolina just after Labor Day.

North Carolina has state-run ABC Stores. For those living in more enlightened climes, ABC Stores are our liquor stores and not something with teacher supplies. Though, on second thought, a case could be made for that near the end of a long school year.

The ABC Stores are closed on Sundays and five holidays including Labor Day. Bars and restaurants in Charlotte are afraid they might run out of booze with all the Democrats in town so a bi-partisan group of Mecklenburg County legislators are seeking an exception.

A bipartisan coalition of Mecklenburg County legislators introduced a bill to the N.C. House making sure visitors to the Democratic National Convention can guzzle with gusto after getting off the plane.

The bill would keep the Alcoholic Beverage Control stores in Mecklenburg County open on Labor Day Monday for this year only.

The holiday exception means local stores wouldn’t be closed for two days in a row – so restaurants, hotels and caterers could stock up on spirits ahead of thousands of convention arrivals. The DNC runs Sept. 4-6.

“Whatever we can do to make the process smooth for members of the national media and members of the national political community visiting Charlotte,” said Rep. Bill Brawley, a Republican from Matthews and one of the sponsors of the bill. “I think good manners require us to do that.”

Keeping Democrats drunk is something I think we can all agree on.

ROFLMAO

The Washington Post reports today that the Service Employees International Union’s NC affiliate, SEAC, has failed to get the 85,000 signatures needed to qualify their “party” for the November elections.

SEANC (State Employees Association of North Carolina) was mad at certain Blue Dog Democrat such as Congressmen Heath Shuler (D-11), Larry Kissell (D-8), and Mike McIntyre (D-7) who voted against Obama’s health care “reform” bill. To punish them, they planned on starting a third party called North Carolina First to elect a “real” Democrat instead of a more conservative Blue Dog.

They say they have recruited a candidate by the name of Wendell Fant to run in the 8th District against Rep. Larry Kissell. Democrats are afraid this might split the vote for Kissell, a first-term Congressman, and give the seat to the Republicans. And this is in the face of some brutal intercine warfare between the Republicans in the 8th District. I’m sure whomever the Republicans do select in the run-off primary is jumping up and down with joy at the prospect.

The Instapundit, Glenn Reynolds, commented on their failure saying “Remember, this isn’t a union made up of tough, disciplined coal miners. It’s a union made up of DMV clerks…” I’d go a step further and remind folks that SEANC is forbidden by law from striking and from engaging in collective bargaining. They are the ultimate Paper Tiger.
