Obviously Emblematic Of Gun Control’s Sagging Support

I know they say “Keep Austin Weird” but even this is weird by Austin standards.

Earlier this afternoon, CATI (Come and Take It) conducted a walk through downtown Austin to raise awareness for the current restrictions on gun rights in Texas. This walk is done monthly, and today’s walk was led by Thomas Jefferson from their Austin Chapter. Anti-gun protestors decided to arrive though, and they conducted their protest TOPLESS!

While being topless and exposing one’s boobs in public is legal in Austin, it does seem a strange way to protest against gun rights. Having seen the pictures of the protesters, I’d say it is emblematic of gun control’s sagging support (pun fully intended).

Pictures of the counter-protesters can be seen here but you are on your own for eye bleach.

An Alert For The Chicagoland Area

The Demanding Mommies are never satisfied and, unfortunately, never give up. Not happy that the Niles (IL) Planning Board turned them down regarding a gun store in Niles, they are taking their fight to the Niles Village Council.

They are pushing the Niles Village Council to turn down the application at their July 22nd meeting. The Illinois State Rifle Association has issued an alert for gun rights supporters in the Chicagoland area. They are asking people to attend the meeting and to make sure that the Village Council doesn’t forbid the lawful commerce in firearms.

The alert is below:

URGENT ALERT – YOUR ACTION REQUIRED

BLOOMBERG MOMS SET TO RESUME ATTACK ON NILES ILLINOIS GUN SHOP AND RANGE

The Niles Village Council will soon take a final vote on whether to allow a gun shop and pistol range to open in the village. The application for the permit to open the range was voted on earlier this summer and approved by the Planning Board by a 6:1 vote.

However, gun control extremists led by the BLOOMBERG MOMS convinced the village council to force the Planning Board to take a second vote on the proposal. The objective of the BLOOMBERG MOMS was to have the gun shop and range SHUT DOWN IN COMMITTEE.

The second vote of the Planning Board on July 7th found in favor of the shop and range by a 5:2 margin. The BLOOMBERG MOMS browbeat a female board member into voting against gun rights.

THE BLOOMBERG MOMS WILL BE OUT IN FORCE THE NIGHT OF JULY 22
ND

The supporters of the gun shop and pistol range desperately need your support to help push this proposal through the Village Board. Lawful gun owners cannot allow the BLOOMBERG MOMS to undermine lawful commerce in firearms or the operation of safe shooting facilities.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO STOP THE BLOOMBERG MOMS:

1. Attend the Niles Village Council meeting and enthusiastically defend your right to keep and bear arms.
2. Post this alert to any and all Internet bulletin boards or blogs to which you belong.
3. Pass this alert on to all your gun owning friends and relatives – tell them to go to Niles also.

WHAT: Niles Illinois Village Council Meeting

WHEN: Tuesday, 22 July 2014, 7 PM (be there at 6:15 to get a good seat)

WHERE: Niles Council Chambers, 1000 Civic Center Drive, Niles, IL

REMEMBER…ONLY YOU CAN SAVE GUN RIGHTS FROM DESTRUCTION BY THE MOMS.

The Facebook Counter-Petition

Moms Demand Action aka the Demanding Mommies are trying to get Facebook to shut down firearm-related Facebook pages. And according to this article by VentureBeat, they might just succeed. That is, if we let them.

The Firearms Policy Coalition has started a counter-petition on Change.org. Their petition has broken the 9,000 signature mark as of this morning. As I understand it, the goal is to get 100,000 signatures by next week. Given that the NRA page has over 3 million likes and the Demanding Mommies page has less than 150,000, I think this is doable.

The FPC notes that Facebook considers even a “like” to be be Constitutionally-protected free speech. Let’s make sure that it is free speech for all and not just a select noisy few.

In Bland v. Roberts, Facebook submitted an amicus brief to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that Facebook speech, even a page “like,” is Constitutionally-protected speech. The brief said that “Facebook strives to create an online environment that facilitates communication, social connection, and the sharing of ideas, and in which Users can engage in debate and advocate for the political ideas, parties, and candidates of their choice….Facebook, for itself and its Users, has a vital interest in ensuring that speech on Facebook and in other online communities is afforded the same constitutional protection as speech in newspapers, on television, and in the town square.”

If that’s true, then Facebook will do the right thing and keep its rules fairly applied and content-neutral. Help us make sure OUR speech isn’t banned — SIGN OUR COUNTER-PETITION RIGHT NOW!

Mayors Demand Illegal Moms

Or is it Illegal Mayors Demand Action (with) Moms?

More appropriately, Moms Demand Action Against Illegal Mayors.

In case you haven’t heard, Mayor Bloomberg’s Illegal Mayors and I’m Just a Stay-at-Home Mom Shannon Watt’s Demanding Moms have agreed to merge.

From USA Today:

Outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns on Thursday will announce that it is joining with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a year-old grassroots campaign launched the day after the Dec. 14, 2012, shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The combined group will align Bloomberg’s deep pockets with the strong social network and media savvy the mothers’ group brings. The billionaire founder of Bloomberg News said last week that he’ll “devote extensive resources of my own” to the effort.

In a statement Wednesday, Bloomberg said, “Gun violence is, unfortunately, an issue that affects every community, and coming together with Moms Demand Action today will strengthen our efforts to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and save lives.”

As Say Uncle noted last night when he first reported this story, “Except that there is no grassroots and there is no high profile.”

California gun rights attorney Chuck Michel compared this merger to when the Brady Campaign and the Million Mom March merged except this time they’ll have Bloomberg’s deep pockets. From the same USA Today article, he said:

“This seems analogous to a corporate takeover, where a large company sees the advantage of acquiring the social media and brand of a target company, but their agendas are the same. In this case, their anti-Second Amendment agendas won’t change,” he says.

There is no word yet from Mr. Gabby Giffords who I imagine is a bit miffed that Bloomberg didn’t pick them as a merger partner.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (sic) calls this a “game changer” on their Facebook page because they think it will give gun control “a fully-funded national grassroots movement.” Yeah, right but Josh and Ladd are still stuck in an office above a coffee shop.

No More Silence Except For Supporters Of Civil Rights

As I mentioned in my weekend roundup, Kaaren Haldeman, North Carolina state director of Moms Demand Action, refused to let Sean Sorrentino into their event at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Durham on Saturday. Sean says in his blog today that it was projection on her part. While she might have disrupted a pro-rights event, he would have never disrupted their event especially in a house of worship.

Moms Demand Action are trying to use their supposed moral superiority to stifle any discussion of their proposals for more gun control. In a republic, it doesn’t work that way. Both sides of a debate should and must be heard for us to survive as a free society.

The video from the event is below. Sean, who has been studying this for a long time, makes the excellent point that most violent crime is committed by those with a criminal past.
