Roadkill – It’s Not Just For Tacky Cookbooks Anymore

Normally when you think of roadkill (if you do at all), you might think of those tacky cookbooks found in some outdoor stores or gift shops with recipes for “found critters”. They have names like Gourmet Style Road Kill Cooking and Other Fine Recipes, Road Kill Cooking Redneck Style and More Tails From the Fast Lane (Vol II), or Quick-Fix Cooking with Roadkill. You may even live in a state where it is totally legal to collect roadkill for these dining adventures.

However, roadkill and collecting it does have some serious scientific purposes. An article in today’s Wall Street Journal discussed roadkill and how wildlife and conservation biologists use it for a variety of purposes from deciding where to put warning signs to avoid car-deer collisions to using it as bait to attract scavengers so as to test their DNA.

From the Wall Street Journal:

If “it’s not road pizza…it has lots of potential future use,” said Greg Pauly, assistant curator of herpetology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, who often carries ethanol-filled test tubes to preserve tissue samples, Ziploc bags and a cooler in case he comes across a meaty roadside specimen. A rattlesnake he found is now part of a Los Angeles biodiversity exhibit at the museum, and some finds are powering his research on how gopher-snake diets have changed thanks to urbanization.

At the Field Museum in Chicago, scientists are using tissues from car-trodden barred owls to study genetics and evolution. These birds have expanded rapidly across the Great Plains and into the Pacific Northwest. They can’t always beat traffic, but they’re out-competing the spotted owl, which is endangered in the region.

“It’s a major conservation issue,” said John Bates, the Field Museum’s associate curator of birds. “What makes barred owls so successful? We’re still looking…15, 20 years ago when salvage work started going, nobody was thinking about the fact we might get genetic data from these samples.”

Dr. Pete Bloom, a biologist in Santa Ana, California, uses it to study turkey vultures. The video below shows his set-up to trap these vultures so he can take blood samples.

There Is Hope For The Next Generation

I came across this on Instagram this evening. It is taken from a standardized test of some sort. I’d like to think the test taker was a teen in some sort of AP History or Government class.

The kids are all right.

A Reading From The Gospel Of Browning

Lo, though the Gospel of Matthew spoke of a star in the East, the Gospel of Browning looks to a young prophet from the West. This young prophet called Ian wanders in the desert of the West seeking the wisdom of the earlier prophets of the Lords of the Gun.

And so it was revealed unto Ian during the time of the long nights how vain men had taken it upon themselves to desecrate the Apostle John Browning’s 1911. Thus, these vain men through their vanity gave the Lord of the Underworld an opening with which to seduce the weak into throwing away the work of the Apostle John Browning.

The Lord of the Underworld, who was called by many names including Gaston Glock, used plastic and simplicity as the tools of his seduction. Just as the Israelites of an earlier age were seduced into worshiping a golden calf, so too the latter day weak who began worshiping the likes of the Glock 19, the M&P Shield, and the Springfield XD. This was an abomination before the Lords of the Gun.

The prophet Ian speaketh below and delivers a Christmas message on this abomination.

Sure To Drive Shannon, Mike, And Hillary Insane

I just saw this video on Facebook of a young girl getting I presume a birthday present. Obviously by the case it is a firearm.

A pink tiger-striped AR-15 with matching magazines!

That wailing and gnashing of teeth that you hear combined with sputtering indignation is the gun prohibitionists saying “how could they?!” meaning the parents of the young girl.

All I can say is good on the parents as a pink tiger-striped AR-15 is way better than a pink Cricket .22 rifle.

Friday Follies

I grew up in Guilford County, North Carolina and lived there until I moved to the mountains. Thus, when I saw this story about a certain road sign being stolen all the time and steps being taken to prevent it, I knew I had a blog post.

Looking at the map of Guilford County below, you will see the major cities of Greensboro and High Point. You will also see smaller communities like Browns Summit, Pleasant Garden, and Whitsett among others. There are other place names that when connected together make an amusing combination. Take a look at the red line that goes from the county’s south-western border through High Point and thence along the southern part of the county towards the eastern border.

Five Easy Steps To A Gun-Free America

When President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other gun-hating progressives speak about how much they like the “Australian Model”, what they really mean is that they want gun confiscation. Unfortunately for them, there are impediments to this.

The good folks at Reason TV have come up with a video to assist the President, Mrs. Clinton, Mike Bloomberg, and all the rest in their campaign to get a gun-free America. By gun-free, I mean, of course, that they will still have their armed guards and we will be at the mercy of predators. As Reason TV says, all it takes is five easy steps.

Walking Dead Fashion Line?

I am most certainly not a fashionista. However, I do from time to time watch Project Runway with the Complementary Spouse. So I do have some exposure to the world of fashion. Thus, when I saw the picture below of Kanye West’s line of clothing my eyes rolled. What would Tim say and how soon would Heidi be saying “Auf Wiedersehen!”.

From NY Mag

I probably saw that picture of his clothing line in the Wall Street Journal. My immediate thought was that it was zombies from the Walking Dead. Given that Kanye is a big gun control supporter, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Gun control does tend to attract zombie-like supporters.

Instagram Picture Of The Day

I found this on Instagram today. It comes from Freedom Hill Gear.  If you have small kids or have been around them recently, you know that they love the movie Frozen and know all the lyrics to “Let It Go”. It hasn’t reached the level of fingernails on a blackboard for me…yet. But for those it has, this picture is for you.

It also works if you need someone to blame for all the snow you are having to shovel.
