Happy 136th Birthday, FN

Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre was formed on July 3, 1889 to make military rifles for the Belgian government. Formed in Herstel, Belgium, their first rifle was the Model 1889 Mauser.

The rifle was chambered in 7.65×53. It was not until New Year’s Eve in 1891 that the first of 150,000 of these rifles were delivered to the Belgian Army.

According to their history, the company diversified into making ammunition and later bicycles to get them through slow times. It was this last endeavor that led to a fortuitous partnership with none other than John Moses Browning.

In 1897, FN sales manager Hart O. Berg traveled to America to learn about bicycle technology developments. While in Hartford, Connecticut, he ran into a past coworker, one John Moses Browning, who was still working with Colt, and wanted help manufacturing a new self-loading pistol.

As I said, a fortuitous partnership without which we would not have such classics as the Auto-5 shotgun, the Model 1900 semi-auto pistol, and the Browning Hi-Power as perfected by Browning’s protege Dieudonné Saive.

On This Day In History

While some know today as St. Valentine’s Day or just Valentine’s Day, it is also the 112th anniversary of the patenting of one of the most significant firearms in history. For it was on this day in 1911 that John Moses Browning was awarded Patent No. 984,519 for what became known as the Colt Model 1911.

The United States Army would adopt this pistol, with a few modifications, the next month on March 29th. The official designation was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911. The Navy and Marine Corps would adopt it as their service pistol in 1913. The US military procured approximately 2.7 million of these pistols including in the M1911A1 version over its service life. I know my father was issued one when he served in South Vietnam as I have his issued equipment inventory.

In civilian life, the 1911, in its multitude of forms, would be used by law enforcement, competitors, and shooters of all ages and all sorts. It would come in different sizes from large to small. It would be chambered in everything from .45 ACP to 10mm to .22LR. Even today, new models are being released such as the recent offerings from Savage Arms.

I doubt that even such a forward thinker as Browning could have envisioned just how popular his invention would become. You can read the full patent application here. Unfortunately, it was too large to embed.

In Honor Of John Moses Browning’s Birthday

January 23, 2014 marks the 159th anniversary of the birth of John Moses Browning in Ogden, Utah Territory. The poster below illustrates the breadth of Browning’s design genius as well as its prolific nature. No firearm designer in history has designed as many different firearms that have stood the test of time for so long.

Examining the list of guns he designed, variations of the 1911, the Auto-5 shotgun, the Winchester 1892, and the M-2 .50 BMG heavy machine gun are still in use on a regular basis.

The Ultimate JMB Collector’s Item

While I might argue that you can’t have too many 1911s (or Browning Hi-Powers), this is a one of a kind collector’s item for the ultimate John Moses Browning fan.

The Browning Mansion in Ogden, Utah is now on the market again. The price for the 8 bedroom, 3 bath home which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places is a mere $350,000. It has updated heating and cooling system and new carpeting.

For all we know, the ghost of JMB inhabits the home and will share some of his gun-designing genius with the new owner.
