NRA Election Committee Report

I will have a more complete report on the NRA Meeting of Members up later. However, I wanted to get this statistics from the Election Committee out.

Bob Barr, former Congressman from Georgia and Director, was chair of the Elections Committee. He started out his report detailing how votes were tallied by an independent accounting firm and how they were read electronically.

Barr then gave these statistics:

  • Ballots Mailed – 2,535,798
  • Ballots Received – 78,327 or 3%
  • Valid Ballots – 75,454
  • Invalid Ballots – 2,873
    • 1,163 received after the deadline
    • 558 missing membership number
    • 503 not signed
    • 401 voted for more than 26 candidates
    • 168 voted for zero candidates
    • 47 used an improper ballot (last years or photocopied)
    • 33 had multiple votes for the same candidate
  • Ballots that contained write-in votes – 1,218

No write-in candidate received enough votes to be elected.

Barr then ran through the list of everyone elected or who failed to get elected. I had those name up earlier and you can find them here.

My first impression is that fewer and fewer members are bothering to even vote. Given a low turnout local or municipal election will have a response of 15% +/-, a response of 3% is horrendous. Either people feel their vote doesn’t make a difference or they just don’t care anymore. Bear in mind everyone who got a ballot was either a Life Member or a 5 year continuous annual member.

The second impression is that this is the time for petition candidates to get on the ballot. The bylaws state that for a petition candidate to be placed on the ballot the threshold is 0.5% of the valid ballots cast in the past election. That means a candidate would need 378 valid signatures to make the ballot. Compare this with earlier years when a candidate need 6-700 or more to make the ballot.

One final note is that Rick Ector was elected as the 76th Director for a one year term. Congratulations to Rick as this is recognition, in my opinion, for all his hard work in Detroit training thousands of women year in and year out.

2023 NRA Board Of Director Election Results

I knew my friend and fellow co-host on The Polite Society Podcast, Amanda Suffecool, had been elected to the NRA Board of Directors. She had posted it on Facebook that she had been notified of her election.

As to the rest, I just received a copy of the results by order of finish.

1. Jay Printz

2. Charles L. Cotton

10. Judi White

11. Clel Baudler

12. Barbara Rumpel

13. Herbert A. Lanford, Jr.

26. Isaac D. Demarest

NOT ELECTED — ELIGIBLE TO RUN FOR 76TH DIRECTOR

27. Charles R. Beers III

28. James Chapman

29. Rick Ector

Looking over the list, I’m happy for Amanda and feel bad for my friend Rick Ector. Few people on that list have done more than he at the grassroots level with his annual women’s training event in Detroit.

As to the results, other than Charles Cotton coming in second, there is no rhyme nor reason to the order of finish. Looking at two from North Carolina, how does an elderly hack like Howard “Walt” Walter come in 6th while current Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson come in 21st?

No Endorsements For NRA Board

I received my ballot for the 2023 NRA Board of Directors election in today’s mail. Unlike in past years, I will not be making any endorsements. Let me explain my reasoning.

First, there are no petition candidates running for the Board in this election. Every candidate – good, bad, or indifferent – is on the ballot thanks to the efforts of the Nominating Committee. Everyone has been vetted to some extent and is considered “safe”. The committee is chaired by the ultimate insider and “Friend of Wayne” Kayne Robinson. The vice-chair is Janet Nyce who, if you attended the 2022 Meeting of Members will remember, declared those of us who want reform as “the enemy within”.

Second, while I will probably vote for a couple of people on the list that I know fairly well, any endorsement from me would be counter-productive to their chances. My reporting on the NRA’s troubles has earned me no friends in Fairfax and my endorsement would make them suspect if elected.

Third, it just doesn’t matter. One potential reformer or even two will be ostracized by the rest of the Board. I have heard how good people like Judge Phil Journey and Frank Tait have been treated like something the dog dragged in by the rest of the Board. The shameful juvenile conduct of the majority of the Board is disgusting. Moreover, you have elderly hacks like Walt Walter re-nominated while an accomplished attorney like Graham Hill was not re-nominated thanks to hostility towards him by Kayne Robinson.

If change is going to come to the NRA – and it will – it will be from outside. It will either come from a Bankruptcy Court as Rocky Marshall postulates or it will come as a result of the New York Attorney General’s lawsuit. People who think the NRA is going to win in court in Manhattan are willfully ignorant. Anyone who has followed the trial knows that things are not going that well for the NRA. The only thing that might be considered a win is that dissolution has been taken off the table by Judge Cohen. Add in the NRA’s incomprehensible decision to ask for a jury trial in Manhattan and you know it won’t go well.

2023 NRA Board Nominations Released

The list of people nominated by the Nominations Committee for the 2023 Board of Directors election has been released. Comparing the list below to the candidates who ran in 2020, you find 21 of the 2023 nominees are repeats. A couple more – James Chapman and Isaac Demerest – are board members elected in subsequent years.

It goes without saying that Frank Tait was not nominated. He has indicated he will not be running by petition this time. Also not nominated were Judge Phil Journey and Graham Hill. Given that Journey has been treated as a persona non grata since the bankruptcy filing, his not being re-nominated is not a surprise. It is surprising that Graham Hill who finished 8th in 2020 was not re-nominated as he had served on the board for 15 years and had been an Executive Committee member in the past. One rumor that I heard is that the NRA’s outside counsel didn’t want any attorneys on the board other than NRA President Charles Cotton.

Included as new nominees are Rick Ector and Amanda Suffecool who have done great work at the grass roots level. With the exception of Charles Beers III, I don’t know anything about the rest.

As to Beers, he was the person who offered the resolution at the Meeting of Members that declared “profound support for the past, present, and future leadership of its Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.” If you read the review of the Annual Meeting in either the American Rifleman or Shooting Illustrated (page 57 in both), that is the only mention of the Meeting of Members. Call me a cynic, but it seems that if you suck up to Wayne big time and publicly then you will get your reward. That really is kind of pathetic.

As of now, I know of no one who plans to run as a petition candidate. If I do hear of anyone, I will post on it.
