Quote Of The Day

Today’s quote of the day comes from historian and classicist Victor Davis Hanson. To my mind, Hanson is one of the most astute observers in America.

From his post in the National Review Online entitled “A Presidency Squandered” in which he discusses all the advantages and goodwill that Barack Obama had going for him when he entered office in 2009.

And what happened?

Barack Obama chose to ram down the nation’s throat a polarizing,
statist agenda, energized by the sort of hardball politics he had
learned in Chicago. Rather than bring the races, classes, and genders
together, he gave us an us-versus-them crusade against the “1
percenters” and the job creators who had not “paid their fair share,”
accusations of a Republican “war on women,” and the worst racial
polarization in modern memory. Statesmanship degenerated into chronic
blame-gaming and “Bush did it,” as he piled up over $5 trillion in new
debt.  Financial sobriety was abandoned in favor of creating new
entitlement constituencies, and job creation was deemed far less
important than nationalizing the health-care system.

And so here we are, three weeks before the election, with a
squandered presidency and a president desperately seeking reelection not
by defending his record, but by demonizing his predecessor, his
opponent — and half of the country.

What, then, was Obama’s first term?

Jimmy Carter’s ends justifying Richard Nixon’s means.

That is indeed a bad combination – Carter’s ineffectiveness combined with Nixon’s paranoia and viciousness. God help us if he is returned for a second term.

Quote Of The Day

The quote of the day comes from former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) regarding the trouncing that Obama took in the first presidential debate and the attempt to blame John Kerry for inadequately preparing Obama. Here is what he posted on Facebook:

Some members of Obama’s campaign staff are now blaming John Kerry for insufficiently preparing Obama for the debate.

Guys, don’t blame the jockey if your Shetland pony can’t win the Kentucky Derby.

Quote Of The Day

The quote of the day comes from Cemetary’s Gun Blog. After noting that The Who’s Won’t Be Fooled Again is quite appropriate for this political season, he asks this question:

But I have to wonder, since they sing about ‘fighting in the streets’, ‘shotguns singing songs’, ‘hat tipping to the revolution’, would CSGV put Pete Townshend and The Who on the insurrectionist timeline?

Given that Ladd’s musical tastes run more to America, they probably would.

Quote Of The Day

In an anti-conceal carry opinion piece written for the Daily Nebraskan, the student paper at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Amanda Keenan has this howler:

A final argument against concealed carry on campus is the level of discomfort generated from having a gun around. People go to institutions of higher learning mainly to get an education. Allowing guns in classrooms would prove to be a distraction more than they would be a necessity. Students would lose their concentration during tests and stare aimlessly as the lights reflected off the steel of a .57 magnum.

Not that college students don’t already stare aimlessly during exams but seeing the lights reflecting off the steel of a .57 magnum must really be something. Imagine a pistol that makes the .500 Smith and Wesson – currently the most powerful production handgun cartridge around – look puny. Wow!

I have a serious suggestion for young Ms. Keenan. The next time she plans to write on guns and gun issues I would suggest that she check out the NSSF’s “Writer’s Guide to Firearms and Ammunition.” It would help her look a little less foolish even if she decides to stick with her backward ideas on campus carry.

Quote Of The Day

Frank J. Fleming writes for Townhall.Com and blogs at IMAO.us. His rather satirical and snarky column today is entitled “The First Term of Obama Has Been a Failure… of America.” That should give you a feel for his writings.

The first term of the Obama administration has been a complete failure — a complete failure of Americans to deserve the great president they elected.

President Obama has done everything for you. He spent billions to create you dozens of new green jobs. He’s given you amazing new health care laws. He even wore a flag pin a couple of times, though that had to disgust him. And his poor wife has done all she can to put up with the sight of your fat children waddling around everywhere. And yet you shout and shake your fat fists at him like _he’s_ done something wrong. It reminds me of the end of that one _Twilight Zone_ episode where everyone screams when they see the beautiful woman, because they all have pig faces, and she’s different from them. Well, Obama is the delicate beauty, and you’re all the ugly, pig-faced idiots whose sight should repulse and terrify him.

Quote Of The Day

The quote of the day comes from Tam and her discussion of the abysmally poor marksmanship of New York’s Finest on Friday.

That’s gotta suck for Bloomie. What appeared to be an ideal soapbox for a little blood-dancing national conversation on how America’s lax gun laws are hurting Mike’s fat-free, sugar-free, low sodium gun-free paradise turns into a national conversation on why the hell can’t Mike’s cops shoot?

Quote Of The Day

In a column for PJ Media, Mike McDaniel examined the killing of two home owners when their homes were invaded by SWAT teams. In both cases, neither home owner had broken the law and no evidence of any wrongdoing on their part was found. Their only “crime” was to be armed in the presence of overzealous SWAT teams. In the case of Jose Guerena, the police had a warrant but no probable cause for its issue. In the case of Andrew Lee Scott, they had the wrong guy and the wrong apartment when they knocked on the door.

McDaniel is a former police officer, detective, and SWAT team officer so I think he knows of what he speaks.

In a free society, a society with a fundamental right to keep and bear arms, police officers believing they may shoot a citizen in his own home simply because he is carrying a firearm cannot be tolerated. Officers must absolutely avoid putting citizens in situations where they might be armed, or even pointing firearms in the direction of police officers banging on or breaking down their front doors. If such misconduct is tolerated, as in the cases of Jose Guerena and Andrew Scott, the next knock on any citizen’s door may be the last they ever answer.
