by I saw a tweet today from KCAL-TV that had me shaking my head. KCAL-TV is the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, California. It was talking about a weapon recovered at the scene of a shooting.

An assault revolver with high cap mags? OMG!
Michael Bane has spoken in the past many times about a program that he and NSSF put on for journalists. It was to teach them the basics of firearms. I think it may be past time to bring it back.
On the other hand, seeing so-called journalists making stupid comments like this about firearms does illustrate my point about their naivete’ and stupidity. Unfortunately, too many of their listeners think they know of what they speak and believe them.

I experienced much the same at the NRA /LEO shotgun and pistol instructors class I attended. Roughly 30 students, and three class members showed up with revolvers as their duty weapon. The first day, they had the speed loaders on the opposite side from the holster, as you would do with a semi-auto. If you know revolvers, you know this is incorrect. During a break I quietly advised them of this, and did a pantomime of the reload procedure. One of the instructors noticed this and the lead instructor approached me later. I was expecting a bit of a rebuke for usurping their role. To my surprise, the conversation was about being an “old guy”, knowing how to run a revolver, and being the only other student in the class who had the knowledge… and would I mind keeping an eye on them and helping them out.
I also saw three LEOs who showed up with a brand new shotgun, still in the original box, unfired. I know this because I asked them. Who takes a class, much less a “professional” class with an untried firearm?
I understand buying a new gun for a class, as I bought a Mossberg 590 and had it off to VangComp before that class, but I also put 200+ slugs and 200+ 00 shells through it before attending.
