Speaking of the shutdown itself. It appears everyone in Washington has decided no movement will happen this week, so that’s a fun update.
They should do this like the Catholics. If no budget is passed we get to lock their butts in that building with no media to pander to until they work it out. I am tired of both sides BS media appearances and the attempts at puns and jabs.
Imagine that. Locked into the floor of the Senate and the House like the College of Cardinals locked into the Sistine Chapel during the conclave to elect a new pope. Given both houses of Congress are in session usually for less than five days a week, I could see this expanded to more than the budget.
I don’t know. The less Congress does, the less they can screw things up.
Other than the budget and appointments, I could do with them staying home 90% of the rest of their time.
I believe that the list of members is to be provided so that they are exempted; it does not appear that this was a class action so that may be what this is about. The lawyers will work this out, I expect.
Let’s take it a step further. Congress gets NO PAY until they pass a budget. If they pass it within the first 90 days of the session they get back pay, otherwise they forfeit all pay until a budget is delivered for signature.
This is a compromise, my first thought was “after a certain number of weeks each chamber draws lots, takes the loser up to the Capitol roof and throws them off.”
Their pay is insignificant. Look at the number who become multi-millionaires after holding no other job. Withholding pay won’t shut off the grift.
True, it’s largely a symbolic gesture – but one that also MIGHT start making people look at their “outside income” sources.
Frankly, I’d like to see their DC housing allowances done away with and ongress moved into BOQ-style dormitories in the Capitol complex and confined to the Capitol grounds for the entire session. “You don’t leave unless on Congressional business approved by your Committee chair/caucus leader or going to/from your district, no fancy steaks at The Palm. Your life is your office, your dorm and your chamber’s dining facility.” You know, make them live like an average grunt…
And put Hegseth in charge of PT. There are member gyms somewhere in the complex.
