Don’t Wait To Call

My friend Gary Daugherty, former co-host with me on the old Polite Society Podcast, passed away on Sunday. He was only 59 but had been suffering with kidney disease.

Polite Society Podcast hosts and friends at 2017 GRPC.

Gary was bigger than life in more ways than one. He was 6’5″ and “robust”, had played as a lineman at Divison 1 Southern Illinois and Colorado, was a firearms trainer, had served on the Kane County (Illinois) Board, and even had been an Illinois state representative for all of eight days. The last was to fill an empty seat in the Illinois State House. Gary took that in good humor and had a retired Illinois State Representative license plate.

I last spoke with Gary a number of months ago. I knew he was on dialysis and was planning to relocate to Paducah, KY. For some reason, Gary was in my thoughts a couple of weeks ago and I said to myself, “I need to call him to see how he is doing.” Sadly, I let the immediate get in the way of the important and I never called.

Don’t be me. If you think of an old friend with whom you haven’t spoken in a while, call them. You may never get another chance.
