by I had never heard of the concept of free recoil until I saw this video put up by Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk Media. The gist of it is that you have the rifle steadied on a rest and you pull the trigger without the buttstock being locked into your shoulder. Indeed, it isn’t even touching your shoulder.
I’ll have to try this the next time I go to the range.
This is commonly considered the proper way to shoot springer-type air rifles. Look up "artillery hold".
