80% Receivers

If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time you know that I’m a big fan of infographics. I think I first became aware of them by reading political science professor Edward Tufte’s book The Visual Display of Quantitative Information (#commission earned) many, many years ago.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has developed a social media share center that is loaded with infographics on a variety of shooting and firearm topics.

Given that the Biden Administration is currently contemplating moves against personally made firearms, I thought this one on unfinished receivers or lowers was particularly relevant.

The gun control lobby conveniently forgets to mention many things in their jihad against personally made firearms. For example, while it is 100% legal to make the firearm for personal use it is against federal law to sell that firearm to anyone. If you want to make firearms to sell, you need to federally licensed by BATFE and each firearm must have a serial number.

  1. Splitting hairs here, but you can sell a homemade firearm. It’s all about intent. Did you create the firearm with the intent to sell it to another individual? That’s the instance where you need to have a FFL because you are now engaging in the business of manufacturing/selling firearms. Did you create the firearm with the intent of personal use and then later decide to sell it to another individual? That’s legal because you are not engaging in the business of manufacturing/selling firearms, you are selling firearms from your personal collection. The timeframe involved in the creation and selling process can reveal you intent to the ATF.

    1. I think this is a gray area and I’d be really (REALLY!) careful. I have seen posts from attorneys saying that it is legal as you say but then again this is the ATF we are dealing with.

  2. Just the latest from the Left. It isn’t criminals making guns, it’s hobbyists. If you want a gun that is not traceable to you it’s easy enough to get one legally. And if you are a criminal, it’s even easier. The whole thing is just harassment of people in the gun culture. Cut off a piece at a time and sooner or later, there is nothing left.
