Tweet Of The Day

I haven’t said anything on my blog about the shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs. Part of it because there is more and more coming out. Part of it is because I don’t believe in instant analysis. Finally, part is that I spent the whole weekend taking Massad Ayoob’s MAG-20 Classroom – Armed Citizen’s Rules of Engagement and I am decompressing from that intense experience.

I saw this tweet a bit ago. Former Bush speechwriter David Frum is calling for a lifetime ban on those who “raises a hand against a woman or a child”.

The anti’s are saying some of the stupidest stuff. They are calling for new laws when the laws that would have prevented the church murderer from legally obtaining a firearm were already in place. The problem was that someone in the US Air Force screwed up and didn’t report the results of the general court martial in 2013 to the FBI’s NICS check system. Note that this screw up occurred during the Obama Administration.

  1. The shooter was tried by a "Special court-martial". Regardless of the offenses involved, a special court-martial sentence is limited to no more than forfeiture of two-thirds basic pay per month for one year, and additionally for enlisted personnel, one year confinement (or a lesser amount if the offenses have a lower maximum), and/or a bad-conduct discharge.

  2. I don't think that the Obama administration has any bearing on this. We've seen time and time again that disqualifying offenses aren't reported to the FBI by various States and institutions. I think (think) that there's a bill winding its way through Congress hoping to simplify the process. IIRC, NRA is supportive, just like they were of a similar bill following VA Tech.

  3. Also appears he was involuntarily committed, and if so, it's again like VA Tech where the legal equivalent wasn't reported to the NICS.

They wanted a "nationwide conversation" about guns (again) when Sparklefarts was prez. They got one but the outcome wasn't exactly to their liking.
When their parties basic platform is to go full retard on guns, this isn't much of a surprise.
