Michael Bane On Wayne’s Departure

I had been waiting for Michael Bane’s weekly MBTV On the Radio podcast on Wayne LaPierre’s departure from the NRA. I was not disappointed.

As he has related in the past and did so again today, he openly acknowledges that he has crossed swords with Wayne over outreach and public relations. That said, Michael said we have needed the NRA in the past and will continue to need them. He also emphasized that we are the NRA and the NRA is not Wayne and not his pack of enablers on the board.

Listen to the first 25 minutes of the podcast here. I agree with him that if Wayne had left in 2019 Wayne might have rode off into the sunset with both his reputation and wealth intact.

If you are not a regular listener, you should be.

  1. My issues with Wayne began way back in 2008 as I saw him crossing over into non-2A culture war issues.

Frankly, I’m not a Republican, though I have bored for some R candidates. Even work on their campaigns. I’m a pretty staunch libertarian and my am very liberal in social issues.

I feel that we need to keep the 2A tent as wide as possible and bleeding out focus into culture war issues that alienates liberal gun owners is poor strategy.

I had the very same fight as a prime mover in Illinois Carry when it started to narrow its tent.

Sadly, the NRA has squandered a lot of its main equity which is its impact legislatively. I only hope is when we get our house in order we can rebuild that.

  2. I agree with David Lawson. I got tired of the NRA getting involved in issues that don’t impact the Second Amendment. I’m also sickened by how they have routinely chosen to endorse candidates who have a mediocre or worse history on the Second Amendment.
